Spanish American Club awards five scholarships

Each year, the scholarship committee of the Spanish American Club, Inc. selects students from Martin and St. Lucie graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue advanced degrees at Florida colleges or universities.  This year’s winners were Barbara Moreno of Stuart; and Moriah Weir, Jennifer Arriola, Gabriela Garcia, and Dayana Espinosa, all of Fort Pierce.

Scholarship committee chair Nancy Rozon, with members Fe Valderuten and Ron Bryson, selected the students.  Scholarship were established in 1992 for Hispanic seniors of Martin and St. Lucie public high schools. Over the past 23 years, 43 Hispanic students have benefited from the scholarship.

The Spanish American Club’s 2017-2018 board of directors are Ruben Aleman, president; Nancy Rozon, vice president; Luis Carrillo, treasurer; Al Feliciano, secretary; Ray Guadalupe, public relations; Isa Bryson, director; and Carlos Mejia, substitute.  The board raises money for the scholarships at monthly dance parties, picnics, cruises, garage sales and other events.

Upcoming club events are Luau Dance, Saturday, Sept.30; Halloween Dance, Saturday, Oct. 28; Thanksgiving Dance, Saturday, Nov. 25; Annual Cruise, Thursday, Dec. 7; and Christmas Dance, Friday, Dec. 29.
